EU countries are calibrating their response after US President Donald Trump raised import tariffs from 10% to 15%, a day after the Supreme Court of the United States ruled much of his previous tariff framework unlawful.

France’s Trade Minister Nicolas Forissier called for a “united approach”, saying the EU has the necessary instruments should retaliation prove necessary. French President Emmanuel Macron stressed the importance of “reciprocity” and the rule of law, signalling that Paris would assess the consequences before acting.

In Germany, Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he would raise tariff concerns during a planned visit to Washington in March, while coordinating closely with Brussels. He described the US court ruling as “reassuring”.

The European Parliament’s trade committee is expected on Monday (23 February) to delay further ratification of the US–EU trade agreement pending legal clarification.
