Ukraine has criticised “ultimatums and blackmail” by Hungary and Slovakia after the governments threatened to halt electricity supplies unless Ukraine restarts flows of Russian oil. Shipments through the Druzhba pipeline have been suspended since 27 January following damage from a Russian drone strike.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán have both demanded the resumption of oil transit, citing slow repairs by Ukraine.
In a statement, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry called the actions “provocative, irresponsible, and threaten the energy security of the entire region,” adding that they “play into the hands of the aggressor” and harm commercial energy suppliers. Kyiv is exploring emergency energy measures under its EU Association Agreement
The European Commission has called an emergency meeting of the Oil Coordination Group for Wednesday (25 February) to address a growing dispute over the Druzhba oil pipeline.
