Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has vowed not to yield to US pressure following comments from Donald Trump that Washington is considering limited strikes to compel a deal on Tehran’s nuclear programme.
Pezeshkian spoke on Saturday (21 February) at a ceremony for the Iranian Paralympics team, insisting Iran “will not bow down in the face of these problems.”
“World powers are lining up with cowardice to force us to bow our heads. Just as you did not bow down in the face of difficulties, we will not bow down in the face of these problems,” he said.
Nuclear talks resumed earlier this month in Oman and continued in Switzerland, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stating a draft deal could be ready within “two to three days.”
The US has increased its military presence in the Gulf, deploying over 120 aircraft and sending the USS Gerald R Ford to join the USS Abraham Lincoln strike group.
• Iran warned the UN that any US aggression will be met “decisively and proportionately.”
• Washington described talks as positive but without breakthrough.
• Fears of a regional conflict have prompted countries including Sweden, Serbia, Poland and Australia to advise their citizens in Iran to leave the country.
