Violence has spread across Mexico after Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho”, was killed during a military operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco.

The Mexican defence ministry said special forces carried out the operation targeting the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Four cartel members were killed and three soldiers injured.

Retaliatory unrest followed across at least a dozen states.

Key developments:

• Around 250 roadblocks reported nationwide; 65 in Jalisco

• 25 arrests, including 11 linked to violent acts

• Public transport and schools suspended under a “code red” declared by Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro

• Flights to Jalisco cancelled by major US and Canadian airlines

President Claudia Sheinbaum said there was “absolute co-ordination” between federal and state authorities, urging citizens to remain calm.

The US had offered a $15m reward for information leading to Oseguera’s capture.
