Pakistan and Qatar have agreed to deepen strategic and economic cooperation following talks in Doha between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani.

Sharif also met Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, as well as State Minister for Trade Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed Al-Sayed, to advance trade, investment, energy and defence cooperation.

Both sides reaffirmed “strong brotherly relations” and discussed regional security, including developments in Afghanistan and Iran.

Key developments:

• Focus on trade, energy, defence, labour mobility and cultural cooperation

• Qatar Investment Authority’s previously announced $3bn investment plan targeting transport, aviation and technology

• Nearly 300,000 Pakistanis living and working in Qatar

• Emphasis on dialogue and de-escalation over Afghanistan tensions

The talks come as Pakistan seeks Gulf investment to stabilise its economy while maintaining regional security partnerships.
