The Trump administration has formally warned Ukraine against striking targets inside Russia that could affect US economic interests, Kyiv’s ambassador to Washington said.
Olha Stefanishyna, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, confirmed she received a diplomatic démarche from the US Department of State following a November drone strike on the Russian port of Novorossiysk.
Kyiv’s attack on the strategically located Black Sea port damaged two tankers that form part of Moscow’s so-called shadow fleet.
The strikes also damaged a terminal belonging to Kazakhstan’s Caspian Pipeline Consortium, part-owned by Chevron and Exxon.
“We have heard from the Department of State that we should refrain from attacking American interests,” said Stefanishyna, speaking at a press conference to mark the fourth anniversary of the war.
Key developments:
• US warning relates to American economic assets, not Russian military targets
• Novorossiysk is a major Russian oil export hub
• 47% of US firms in Ukraine report damage from Russian strikes
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has described attacks on Russian energy infrastructure as Kyiv’s form of “sanctions”.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha accused Moscow of targeting US businesses, citing damage to facilities linked to Boeing, Flex, and Mondelez.
