Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has called an early general election for 24 March, describing the next four years as “decisive” for Danish and European security.

Addressing parliament, the Prime Minister said Denmark must “stand on our own feet” and reassess its relationship with the United States, adding that security will remain “the very foundation of Danish politics”.

The move follows renewed tension with US President Donald Trump over Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory within the Danish Commonwealth.

Trump recently withdrew threats to use force to annex the Arctic island but continues to argue US ownership is necessary for defence against Russia and China. Denmark and Greenland have rejected any transfer of sovereignty.

Key developments:

• Election scheduled for 24 March 2026.

• Over 100 US troops remain stationed at a long-running American base in north-west Greenland.

• Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen rejected a US proposal to send medical supplies, citing Greenland’s universal healthcare system.
