Fighting between Pakistan and Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities entered a third day on Saturday (28 February), escalating tensions along the 2,600km Pakistan–Afghanistan border.

Pakistani strikes reportedly hit Taliban military sites in Kabul and Kandahar, marking one of Islamabad’s deepest incursions in years. Pakistan accuses the Taliban of harbouring Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants — an allegation Kabul denies.

Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif described the clashes as “open war”, saying Islamabad’s patience had run out.

Taliban Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani warned the conflict would be “very costly”.

Key developments:

• Pakistan says 12 soldiers killed; claims 274 Taliban fighters dead (unverified).

• Taliban reports 13 fighters and 110 Pakistani troops killed; 52 civilians dead in Khost and Paktika.

• Operation “Ghazab Lil Haq” ongoing, according to Pakistani security sources.

• UN, EU, China and Russia urge de-escalation; the US backs Pakistan’s right to self-defence.
