Iranian state television has confirmed the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Supreme Leader of Iran, following joint US-Israeli air strikes.

Tasnim News Agency said the 86-year-old cleric was killed in his office. Satellite imagery indicated extensive damage to his compound. The Supreme National Security Council declared seven public holidays and 40 days of mourning.

US President Donald Trump described the killing as “justice” and urged Iranians to “take back their country”. He said US strikes would continue under Operation Epic Fury to target Iran’s missile infrastructure.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said further operations would hit “thousands of targets”.

The confirmed death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has created a significant leadership vacuum in Iran, triggering concern over succession and regional stability.

Analysts warn the loss of Iran’s central authority risks further escalation between Tehran and its neighbours, and may influence global energy markets as the Strait of Hormuz — a key oil transit route — faces heightened tension. World powers have called for restraint even as diplomatic channels strain under the crisis, underscoring the wider geopolitical implications of the strikes.
