South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has pledged measures to ensure citizens “more strongly feel” the benefits of improving South Korea–Japan relations.

Speaking at the 107th anniversary of the 1919 Independence Movement, Lee emphasised forward-looking cooperation with Japan, avoiding direct criticism over historical disputes. It marked his first address at the annual ceremony since taking office in June 2025.

He said progress would be driven by “shuttle diplomacy”, involving reciprocal visits by leaders to strengthen bilateral ties.

Key developments:

• Focus on economic cooperation and people-to-people exchanges.

• Commitment to Japan–South Korea security coordination amid global instability.

• Support for trilateral cooperation between Japan, China and South Korea.

• Continued efforts to resume dialogue with North Korea and the United States.

Lee called for a “peaceful Korean Peninsula” and stressed that regional stability is essential as post-Second World War international norms face mounting pressure.
