Afghanistan and Pakistan said on Monday (2 March) their militaries had targeted each other’s border posts as clashes entered a fifth day, marking the heaviest fighting in years along their 2,600km frontier.
The escalation began after the Taliban defence ministry described its strikes as retaliation for Pakistani operations against militants inside Afghanistan. Both sides report heavy casualties and damage, though figures remain unverified.
Key developments:
• Enayatullah Khowarazmi, spokesperson for Afghanistan’s defence ministry, said Afghan forces destroyed a Pakistani armoured tank in Paktika and captured over 25 posts.
• Attaulla Tarar, Pakistan’s Information Minister, said 435 Afghan troops had been killed and 51 locations targeted by air.
• Afghan officials said jets attempted to strike Bagram air base; no casualties were reported.
• Mediation offers from Qatar have yet to yield talks.
Ishaq Dar, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, said Islamabad’s sole demand is that Afghan territory not be used by Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan militants.
