Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar declared a new State of Emergency (SoE) on Tuesday (3 March). The measure follows credible reports of planned attacks against law enforcement and a surge in gang-related violence.

The National Security Council cited “multiple deaths due to mass shootings” as the primary driver for the decision. This emergency grants authorities expanded powers to conduct searches and make arrests without warrants.

Key Statistics and Developments:

• 63 homicides have been recorded so far in 2026.

• The State of Emergency has an initial duration of 15 days.

• Reginald Mac Lean, President of the Tobago Hotel and Tourism Association, warned of a negative impact on tourism revenue.

Opposition leader Pennelope Beckles criticised the move, labelling it an “authoritarian” alternative to strategic crime management.
