US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has said the United States has “only just begun” its military campaign against Iran, signalling a potential escalation in the ongoing conflict.
“We have only just begun to fight and fight decisively,” Hegseth told reporters on Thursday (5 March). “If you think you’ve seen something, just wait.”
Speaking alongside Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of US Central Command, Hegseth said Washington has sufficient military resources to sustain the operation and expand its combat power if required.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said he must be involved in the selection of Iran’s next leader, and made his disdain known for the reported frontrunner Mojtaba Khamenei, the late supreme leader’s son.
“They are wasting their time. Khamenei’s son is a lightweight. I have to be involved in the appointment,” Trump told Axios. “Khamenei’s son is unacceptable to me. We want someone that will bring harmony and peace to Iran.”
