Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian apologised on Saturday (7 March) for Iranian strikes on neighbouring countries as the Iran–US–Israel war continued to escalate across the Middle East.

Speaking a week into the conflict, Pezeshkian said: “I should apologise to the neighbouring countries that were attacked by Iran, on my own behalf. From now on, they should not attack neighbouring countries or fire missiles at them unless we are attacked by those countries. I think we should solve this through diplomacy.”

He also issued a warning to actors in the region, adding: “If some groups in neighbouring countries are thinking of using this opportunity to attack our soil, this is my message to them: you better not become a toy in the hands of imperialism.”

Key developments

• Gen. Abolfazl Shekarchi, spokesman for Iran’s armed forces, said Iran had not targeted states that did not assist US military operations.

• Iran’s UN mission said strikes focused on US bases and military assets.

• Israel reported new airstrikes on Tehran, including an airport allegedly used for weapons transfers.
