US President Donald Trump delivered remarks at the inaugural Shield of the Americas Summit in Doral, Florida, announcing a new regional security initiative aimed at dismantling transnational drug cartels across the Western Hemisphere.

The Shield of the Americas is a multinational military cooperation framework designed to coordinate intelligence sharing and joint operations against organised crime networks and trafficking routes.

Speaking to leaders from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guyana, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay and Trinidad and Tobago, President Trump called for a coordinated military response to cartel violence.

Key developments:

• Donald Trump announced a “brand new military coalition” to combat drug cartels in the Americas.

• The initiative encourages participating states to share intelligence and request US military assistance against cartel networks.

• Trump said US interdiction efforts had reduced drugs entering by sea by 96%, citing maritime enforcement operations.

• The summit follows a recent US operation capturing former Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro, who faces drug-related charges in the United States.
