Western nations have reinforced their military presence in the eastern Mediterranean following the conflict involving Iran, with security around Cyprus becoming a central concern after an Iranian-made drone struck a British military base on the island on 2 March 2026.

The deployments include aircraft carriers, frigates, fighter jets and air-defence systems from NATO allies and EU partners, aimed at strengthening regional deterrence and protecting key bases.

Key developments include:

• The United States deployed the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford with escort vessels operating near Crete.

• The United Kingdom reinforced its Cyprus base with F-35B jets, Typhoon FGR4 aircraft, Wildcat helicopters, and plans to deploy HMS Dragon.

• France sent the carrier Charles de Gaulle with a naval strike group.

• Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, and the Netherlands have dispatched frigates and air-defence assets.

Türkiye has also deployed F-16 fighter jets and air-defence systems to northern Cyprus.
