José Antonio Kast was sworn in as President of Chile on Wednesday (11 March), marking the country’s most significant shift to the political right since the return of democracy in 1990.
The inauguration took place at Chile’s National Congress in Valparaíso, attended by regional leaders including Argentina’s President Javier Milei, Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino, Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa, and Spain’s King Felipe VI.
The ceremony followed Kast’s landslide victory in the 2025 Chilean presidential election over Jeannette Jara, a government-backed communist candidate.
Key developments
• José Francisco Pérez Mackenna was sworn in as foreign minister, María Trinidad Steinert as minister of security, and Fernando Rabat as minister of justice and human rights.
• Outgoing President Gabriel Boric left office with a 53% negative rating, according to polling firm Cadem.
• Kast campaigned on tougher crime policies, stricter immigration controls, and stronger ties with the United States.
Analysts say the government’s direction may depend on its ability to secure support in a divided Chilean parliament during the first 100 days.
