Madagascar’s military leader, Colonel Michael Randrianirina, has dismissed Prime Minister Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo and dissolved the government, just five months after taking power following mass protests in Antananarivo.

A presidential spokesperson said Randrianirina had suspended the government “in accordance with the constitution” and would appoint a new prime minister shortly, without giving a reason for the move.

Randrianirina assumed power in October 2025 after demonstrations over water and electricity shortages escalated into anti-government protests that forced former President Andry Rajoelina to flee the country. The military leader rejects the term coup, describing his authority as a “Refoundation of the Republic.”

Key developments:

• Randrianirina promises a two-year political transition and reforms.

• Constitutional consultations are planned through 2026.

• The decision came ahead of a meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council on Madagascar.
