Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has issued his first public statement since succeeding his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in February during US and Israeli strikes in Tehran.

The statement, broadcast on Press TV, called for national unity and vowed continued resistance against Iran’s adversaries as the regional conflict intensifies.

Khamenei warned that US military bases in the Middle East should close immediately or face attack, while insisting Iran still seeks cooperative relations with neighbouring states.

Key developments

• Mojtaba Khamenei confirmed the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed, describing it as pressure against Iran’s enemies.

• He warned US bases across the region “will be attacked” if they remain operational.

• The leader said armed groups in Yemen and Iraq were prepared to support Iran’s response.

• Khamenei praised Iran’s armed forces for preventing the country from being “dominated or divided”.
