The presidents of Romania and Ukraine, Nicusor Dan and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, signed a statement of intent on Thursday (12 March) to manufacture Ukrainian defence systems, including drones, in Romania.

The move aims to strengthen both countries’ defence industries amid ongoing Russian aggression in Ukraine and threats along Romania’s 650 km border. Ukraine has developed advanced drone and counter-drone technology after four years of conflict, which it now seeks to integrate with NATO partners.

Key developments:

• Agreement to produce Ukrainian defence systems in Romania to enhance military cooperation.

• Plans to leverage Ukrainian drone expertise, particularly in software integration with broader defence networks.

• Discussions on energy, including potential US LNG imports via Romania and Black Sea projects.

• Romania pledges support for unblocking EU aid to Ukraine, previously vetoed by Hungary.
