Relations between France and the Central African Republic (CAR) have been fully restored, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said during a two-day visit to Bangui, the first by a senior French official in seven years.

Barrot’s visit follows the 2024 diplomatic relaunch between CAR President Faustin-Archange Touadéra and French President Emmanuel Macron, after tensions over Moscow’s growing influence.

“My visit marks the full restoration of relations between our two countries… following a period of tension,” Barrot declared.

He added, “France stands with the Central African Republic at a time (…) when the peace and stabilisation process in the country continues,” emphasising Paris’ commitment as a “partner respectful of the sovereignty of the Central African Republic.”

Touadéra, who recently met Russian President Vladimir Putin, noted that security has improved since the 2010s civil war but progress remains “fragile.” Barrot also inaugurated Mosuca’s new headquarters, supporting victims of sexual violence.
