US President Donald Trump has warned Iran that its oil infrastructure on Kharg Island could be targeted ‘should Iran, or anyone else, do anything to interfere with the Free and Safe Passage of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz.’
In a social media post, Trump said US forces had “totally obliterated” military targets on the island. However, he stated that oil facilities — responsible for about 90% of Iran’s exports — were not struck.
The warning comes as the conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel enters its third week, raising concerns about global oil supply.
Key developments
• Trump said the US Navy will soon begin escorting tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, which carries roughly 20% of global fossil fuel supplies.
• Iran’s armed forces warned any strike on its energy infrastructure would prompt retaliation against oil facilities linked to US partners in the region.
• Iranian media reported more than 15 explosions on Kharg Island, hitting air defences, a naval base and airport facilities but not oil terminals.
• Iran continues exporting 1.1–1.5 million barrels of oil per day, with China a major buyer.
