North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the test-launch of 12 600mm-calibre multiple rocket launchers on Saturday (14 March), according to state media KCNA, following annual military exercises by the United States and South Korea.

Kim said the drills were intended to show “enemies within the 420-km striking range… the destructive power of tactical nuclear weapons.” Images from KCNA showed Kim watching the tests alongside his daughter, potential successor Kim Ju Ae.

Key developments:

• North Korea fired over 10 ballistic missiles off the east coast, covering around 350 km with reported 100% accuracy on island targets.

• Kim Yo Jong, Kim’s sister, condemned US–South Korea drills as a “provocative war rehearsal,” while Washington and Seoul describe them as defensive.

• Pyongyang plans to conduct regular drills to reinforce its war deterrence.

North Korea has maintained nuclear and missile development despite UN sanctions since 2006.
