The Republic of Congo is holding a presidential election widely expected to extend President Denis Sassou Nguesso’s rule for another five years, with analysts citing limited opposition and little uncertainty over the outcome.

More than 3.2 million voters are registered in the oil-producing Central African state. Turnout is expected to fall below the 68% recorded in the 2021 election, when Sassou secured 88.4% of the vote.

Key developments:

• Denis Sassou Nguesso, 82, has ruled the Republic of Congo for nearly 42 years, first seizing power in 1979.

• Two major opposition parties are boycotting the election, alleging unfair electoral practices.

• Several prominent opposition figures are in prison or exile, while rights groups say the political space has narrowed.

• Prime Minister Anatole Collinet Makosso says oversight bodies will ensure a “transparent and fair election.”

The oil-dependent economy has stabilised recently, but World Bank data indicates about 52% of Congo’s 6.1 million people live in poverty.
