Madagascar’s President Michael Randrianirina, has appointed anti-corruption chief Mamitiana Rajaonarison as the country’s new prime minister.

The announcement follows the dismissal of the previous prime minister and cabinet earlier in the week. In a televised address, President Randrianirina said the country required “bold decisions” at a turning point for the Malagasy nation.

Rajaonarison has led SAMIFIN (Madagascar’s Financial Intelligence Unit) since 2021, focusing on combating money laundering, illicit financial flows, and terrorism financing.

Key developments:

• Mamitiana Rajaonarison previously held senior roles at BIANCO, Madagascar’s Anti-Corruption Bureau.

• President Randrianirina, a colonel, took power following Gen Z-led protests in October 2025.

• Authorities plan national consultations in 2026 to draft a new constitution.

• Presidential elections are scheduled for late 2027.

The new prime minister is expected to oversee the government during a period of political transition and reform in Madagascar.
