US President Donald Trump said Washington is in discussions with other countries about helping secure the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route, as tensions with Iran continue to disrupt energy flows in the Gulf.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said the United States was receiving a “good response” from partners regarding potential cooperation to police the strait, which carries roughly 20% of global oil supplies. He argued that the effort to keep the passage open would be a “small endeavour”.
Trump also claimed recent US military strikes had significantly weakened Iran’s military capabilities, saying Tehran now has “very little firepower left”.
Trump told the Financial Times on Sunday, “I think China should help too because China gets 90% of its oil from the Straits,”
“We may delay,” he said in reference to his visit if China did not offer support in the Gulf.
He also increased pressure on European allies, warning that NATO faces a “very bad” future if its members fail to support Washington’s efforts to keep the strait open.
