UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said the government “will not be drawn into the wider war” in the Middle East, while stressing a commitment to national security and citizen protection.

Speaking amid the Iran war and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, Starmer outlined plans to support households affected by rising energy costs, announcing £53 million for vulnerable heating oil users.

Starmer emphasised cooperation with allies to reopen vital shipping routes, defend UK interests, and prevent companies from profiting from the cost-of-living crisis, signalling a balance between global responsibility and domestic priorities.

The announcement comes amid US calls for international cooperation to secure the Strait of Hormuz and maintain global energy flows.
