During a visit to London, Alexander Stubb, President of Finland, spoke at Chatham House, offering a candid assessment of Brexit. He described the UK’s departure from the EU as a “colossal mistake” and urged a pragmatic, functional approach to rebuilding ties between the UK and Europe.

Stubb elaborated on the scale of the impact, saying, “I do think it’s not only shooting yourself in the foot, but it’s like amputating your leg without a medical reason for doing it.”

Stubb stressed that extremes on both sides risk hindering cooperation and highlighted the need for practical engagement to protect shared interests and values. He emphasised that the UK’s voice remains essential in European affairs and called for a flexible relationship to foster collaboration, saying Europe “really misses” the UK.
