Chilean President José Antonio Kast has commenced the first phase of his “Border Shield” plan at the northern frontier with Peru, days after taking office on 11 March 2026.

Kast’s government says the initiative aims to reduce illegal crossings, drug trafficking and organised crime by combining physical barriers, trenches, increased military deployment and technology such as drones.

Early work at the Chacalluta border point involved heavy machinery digging a trench, symbolising the start of wider construction.

Key developments:

• Initial trenches and barriers begin near the Peru–Chile northern border.

• “Border Shield” combines physical obstacles, military patrols and surveillance tech.

• Measures follow a period of rising migrant flows and public concern over security.
