Republic of Congo President Denis Sassou Nguesso has been re-elected for a fifth consecutive term, extending his rule to nearly 42 years, according to provisional results.

Interior Minister Raymond Zephirin Mboulou said on state television that Sassou Nguesso won 94.82% of Sunday’s vote, with reported turnout at 84.65%. Observers noted low visible participation in parts of Brazzaville.

Two major opposition parties boycotted the election, citing unfair conditions. Prominent opposition figures General Jean-Marie Michel Mokoko and André Okombi Salissa remain imprisoned.

• Internet access was restricted and movement limited during voting

• Reports of arrests of activists and suspension of opposition parties

• Campaign imbalance, with the incumbent dominating nationwide outreach

• Public debt stands at 94.5% of GDP, despite oil and mineral wealth

Sassou Nguesso first took power in 1979 and returned in 1997 after civil war. A 2015 referendum removed term limits.
