Thailand will start building fences along a portion of its border with Cambodia in April 2026, following deadly clashes in 2025 that heightened long-standing tensions along the frontier.

Mr Vithai Laithomya, spokesman for the Royal Thai Armed Forces, said the first phase will cover 1.31km in Chanthaburi province. He stressed the project is not linked to territorial disputes and has Cambodia’s approval.

The military says the barrier aims to improve border security and reassure local communities. Construction is expected to take 45 days, with plans to expand into a broader surveillance system.

Key developments:

• Initial 1.31km fence along Thailand–Cambodia border

• Landmines cleared; road infrastructure completed on Thai side

• Future upgrades include sensors, CCTV, and permanent barriers

• Over 200 million baht raised, including 121 million from Princess Chulabhorn’s Hataitip Fund
