US President Donald Trump said he believes he would have the ‘honour of taking Cuba’ in some form’, adding that ‘I can do anything I want’ with the neighbouring country, as a US oil blockade deepens Cuba’s economic and energy crisis.

Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump said the island was “very weakened” and confirmed ongoing talks with Havana. Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has separately stated both sides are pursuing “negotiated solutions”.

The situation follows tightened US pressure on Cuba’s oil supply, worsening nationwide power shortages.

Key developments:

• A nationwide blackout followed a “total failure” of Cuba’s electricity grid, officials said.

• Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossio blamed Washington for the crisis.

• Reports suggest the US may seek leadership changes in Havana, though this remains unverified.

• Oil shipments from Venezuela and Mexico have been disrupted, worsening shortages.

Cuba produces around 40% of its oil needs, leaving it highly exposed to external supply shocks.
