Kaja Kallas, the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, told Reuters on Tuesday (17 March) that “the feeling is this is not Europe’s war” while discussing the EU’s response to the US/Israel‑Iran conflict.

On the US role, Kallas said: “We don’t really understand their moves recently,” underscoring European frustration.

She said European nations were not consulted before the escalation and voiced uncertainty over the objectives of the military actions. Kallas also highlighted concerns over freedom of navigation and the limited involvement of NATO allies in securing key maritime routes.

Kallas acknowledged that the transatlantic partnership has been under heavy strain but stressed the EU’s willingness to maintain dialogue and cooperation with its allies.

The comments come as European governments reject US calls to deploy warships to the Strait of Hormuz, favouring diplomatic engagement over direct military involvement.

Energy markets and global shipping remain under pressure following Iran’s disruption of the strait, while EU foreign ministers consider bolstering naval missions without expanding combat roles.
