Peru’s interim President José María Balcázar has appointed General Luis Enrique Arroyo as Prime Minister after Denisse Miralles resigned just three weeks into the role, triggering a cabinet collapse.
Mr Arroyo, who served as Defence Minister under Ms Miralles, takes office as the government faces a looming congressional confidence vote. Under Peruvian law, failure to secure approval forces the entire cabinet to step down.
Ms Miralles, a former Economy Minister under ex-President José Jeri, did not give a clear reason for her resignation. Her departure came amid expectations that Congress, controlled by the opposition, would reject the cabinet.
Key developments:
• All 18 cabinet ministers resigned following Ms Miralles’ exit
• New Defence, Interior, and Economy ministers have been appointed
• Government prioritises electoral transparency ahead of April 12 vote
• Political instability continues, with eight presidents in 10 years
Mr Balcázar is set to govern until 28 July, when a newly elected president takes office.
