US President Donald Trump criticised NATO allies on Tuesday (17 March) for declining to deploy forces to secure the Strait of Hormuz at his request, calling their decision ‘very foolish’.

Speaking alongside Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin during a White House meeting, Trump said allies broadly support Washington’s position but are unwilling to commit forces. He added the United States currently has no plans to retaliate against partners for their stance.

President Donald Trump urged international partners to help secure the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for roughly 20% of global oil flows, after Iran used drones, missiles and naval mines in response to US-Israeli strikes, disrupting tanker traffic.

However, several US allies said they had no immediate plans to deploy naval forces to the area, signalling limited appetite for direct military involvement and effectively rejecting Washington’s request for support.

Trump also referenced US support for Ukraine, saying the United States has supplied extensive military equipment while arguing that NATO allies’ limited assistance over Iran reflects an imbalance in burden‑sharing. He suggested this pattern contributed to his disappointment with the alliance.
