Colombian President Gustavo Petro has been designated a “priority target” by the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), amid federal inquiries in New York into alleged links with drug traffickers. The label indicates DEA considers him to have a “significant impact” on the drug trade.
The investigations, dating back to 2022, focus on:
• Alleged dealings with Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel and Venezuela’s Cartel de los Soles.
• Claims his “total peace” plan was used to benefit traffickers who supported his campaign.
• Alleged bribes from traffickers at La Picota prison to block US extraditions.
• Unverified allegations of using former aides and Ecopetrol officials to launder funds abroad.
Petro has denied all accusations, calling the reports politically motivated. Colombia’s Embassy in Washington described the claims as “unverified” and lacking legal basis.
