Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen faces a weakened mandate after her Social Democrats recorded their worst election result in over a century, despite finishing first.

With nearly all votes counted, the party secured 38 seats, down from 50 in 2022, leaving the centre-left bloc on 84 seats, short of the 90-seat majority in the 179-seat Folketing.

The right-leaning bloc also fell short, with 77 seats, while Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen’s Moderate Party is positioned as a key power broker with 14 seats.

Coalition negotiations are expected to be complex, with no bloc commanding a majority.

The campaign centred on cost of living and immigration, reflecting broader European electoral pressures on traditional parties.
