Iran’s military spokesperson has firmly denied US claims of negotiations aimed at resolving Middle East hostilities. Lieutenant Colonel Ebrahim Zolfaghari dismissed reports of negotiations, asking: “Have your internal conflicts reached the point where you are negotiating with yourselves?”
“Our first and last word has been the same from day one, and it will stay that way: someone like us will never come to terms with someone like you. Not now, not ever,” Zolfaghari added.
Speaking in the Oval Office on Tuesday (24 March), US President Donald Trump said that Iran had given the US an oil and gas-related “present” worth a “tremendous amount of money,” signalling that Washington was “dealing with the right people.” A day earlier, Trump described the talks as “very very strong” and suggested progress had been made.
Following early reports of discussions between Tehran and Washington, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf called them “fake news” aimed at manipulating oil markets. Iran’s foreign ministry also added that no formal negotiations with the US have taken place.
