Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Richard Marles, and Germany’s Federal Minister of Defence, Boris Pistorius, met in Canberra on Thursday (26 March), marking Pistorius’ first official visit to Australia.

The ministers discussed the evolving global security environment and reaffirmed shared positions on key geopolitical issues, including the Indo-Pacific, maritime security, and adherence to international law.

They also highlighted the need to strengthen bilateral defence cooperation and operational coordination, reflecting increasingly interconnected Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific security dynamics.

• Agreement to explore a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA)

• Plans to expand military exercises and personnel cooperation

• Increased focus on space domain collaboration

• Commitment to boost defence industry ties and supply chain resilience

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to a rules-based international order and agreed to deepen strategic alignment through future defence and foreign policy dialogues.
