Speaking during a Cabinet meeting on Thursday (26 March), US President Donald Trump said Iran was “begging to make a deal” as the US–Iran war entered its 27th day, claiming Tehran was privately pursuing negotiations despite publicly denying talks. He added that US operations were progressing ahead of schedule and suggested Iranian authorities viewed the conflict as a “disaster” for the regime.
During the same cabinet meeting, Trump criticised NATO, describing the alliance as ineffective and expressing frustration over what he characterised as a lack of support for US operations in Iran. He suggested the conflict represented a test of the alliance’s willingness to assist the United States.
He further warned that Washington would “remember” the response of allies in the coming months, reiterating longstanding concerns about burden-sharing within NATO and questioning the alliance’s reliability in times of conflict.
The remarks come amid ongoing military operations and diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, with Iran continuing to reject US claims that it is actively negotiating a settlement.
