Yemen’s Houthi movement has launched a barrage of ballistic missiles towards Israel, marking its first direct strikes since the escalation of the US–Israel war on Iran.
Brigadier-General Yahya Saree, the group’s military spokesperson, announced the attack via Al-Masirah TV, stating operations would continue until “declared objectives” are achieved. The Israeli military confirmed intercepting at least one missile.
Sirens sounded in southern Israel, including near Beer Sheba, amid continued regional hostilities involving Iran and Hezbollah.
The Houthis, who have controlled Sanaa since 2014, had previously remained outside the current conflict. However, officials have signalled a potential expansion of operations.
• Mohammed Mansour, deputy information minister, said action may escalate in stages
• Possible disruption of the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a key global trade route
• Previous Red Sea attacks impacted shipping worth an estimated $1 trillion annually
• Over 100 vessels targeted between 2023–2025, with confirmed casualties
