European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has said criticism of Europe is “vastly excessive”, defending the region’s economic and social model in a recent interview with The Economist.

Lagarde argued that expectations of Europe are often unrealistic, even as she acknowledged the region lags behind the United States in GDP and productivity.

She highlighted Europe’s strengths in healthcare, longevity, and social stability, as measures of success beyond economic output. Lagarde added that differences in wealth distribution and societal priorities shape how each system should be assessed.
