Taiwan’s main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT), has confirmed that its chairperson Cheng Li-wun will visit China in April 2026 following an invitation from Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The KMT said Cheng welcomed the invitation and aims to promote “peaceful development of cross-strait relations” and expand cooperation. The delegation is expected to travel to Beijing, Shanghai, and Jiangsu between 7–12 April.
Cheng, elected KMT chair in October 2025, has indicated she hopes to meet Xi, though no confirmation has been provided.
• This would be the first visit by a sitting KMT chair since 2016
• Beijing continues to engage KMT figures while avoiding Taiwan’s government under President Lai Ching-te
• Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has criticised the visit amid defence spending disputes
The trip comes ahead of planned US–China engagement involving US President Donald Trump later in May, adding geopolitical significance to cross-strait developments.
