Israel’s parliament has passed legislation introducing the death penalty as the default sentence for individuals convicted of fatal attacks classified as acts of terrorism under Israeli law, effectively applying to Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.
The law expands the authority of West Bank military courts, allowing death sentences without unanimity and enabling executions by hanging within 90 days. It also limits appeals and clemency options for those tried under occupation.
National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, a leading proponent of the bill, described it as a deterrent. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supported the measure, which passed by 62 votes to 48.
Key developments:
• Death penalty becomes default for certain terrorism-related convictions
• Military courts can impose sentences by majority decision
• Executions set to occur within 90 days, reportedly by hanging
• Legal challenges filed; Israel’s Supreme Court may review the law
European governments and UN experts have expressed concern over potential breaches of international law, discrimination, and human rights implications.
