At a United Nations Security Council briefing on the Middle East, Tom Fletcher, a senior UN humanitarian official, outlined worsening conditions in Lebanon following recent regional escalation.

He reported rising civilian casualties, widespread displacement, and mounting pressure on essential infrastructure, as hostilities continue across southern Lebanon, Beirut’s southern suburbs, and the Bekaa Valley. Cross-border fire involving Hezbollah and Israel has further intensified insecurity along the Blue Line.

Key developments:

• Over 1,240 people killed, including 87 women and 124 children, with 3,500 injured

• More than 1.1 million displaced, including 370,000 children

• Around 200,000 people fled to Syria in the past month

• Healthcare and infrastructure severely impacted, with hospitals, bridges, and access routes damaged

Fletcher emphasised that international humanitarian law requires the protection of civilians and critical infrastructure, and called for safe access for humanitarian operations.
