Zambia and Sweden have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishing structured, high-level political consultations to strengthen bilateral relations.

The agreement was signed in Stockholm on 30 March 2026 by Mulambo Haimbe, Zambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Maria Malmer Stenergard, Sweden’s Minister for Foreign Affairs. It formalises regular dialogue on trade, development, peace, security, and climate action.

Haimbe described the MoU as marking “a new chapter” in relations dating back to 1965, while Malmer Stenergard said it would enhance coordination and support more predictable, results-oriented cooperation.

• Focus areas include trade facilitation, investment, and development cooperation

• Expanded collaboration on climate action and green economic transition

• Continued support in governance, human rights, health, and education

• Framework aims to strengthen engagement on regional and global issues

Officials indicated the consultations could support Zambia’s partnership diversification and Sweden’s engagement with Africa amid evolving geopolitical dynamics.
