Sweden has announced a $916 million (€796 million) investment to strengthen its air and drone defence systems, signalling a major step in the country’s broader defence enhancement strategy.

The package includes radar systems, anti-aircraft weapons, and electronic warfare platforms, representing over half of the funds allocated for defence expansion.

Swedish Defence Minister Pal Johnson stated it is “more important than ever to invest in air defence capabilities,” a position widely endorsed across NATO. He highlighted the alliance’s call for a more than 400% increase in air defence capacities.

Key developments include:

• Agreements signed with Saab and BAE Systems Bofors, with deliveries scheduled from 2027.

• Investments aimed at accelerating Europe’s defence readiness amid growing global demand.

• Johnson emphasised Europe’s need to shoulder a greater share of defence responsibilities, following renewed US criticism of NATO reliance.

The programme positions Sweden as a leading contributor to NATO-aligned defence modernisation.
