India has approved a $25 billion military modernisation package aimed at strengthening air defence and offensive capabilities amid evolving regional security challenges.

The decision, cleared by the Defence Acquisition Council led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, includes expanded procurement of Russian systems and increased investment in unmanned and transport platforms. Analysts link the move to heightened tensions with China and Pakistan, alongside broader shifts in modern warfare.

Key developments:

• Approval to acquire five additional S-400 Triumf air defence systems, expanding existing deployments along northern and western borders

• Procurement of 60 remotely piloted strike aircraft to enhance unmanned combat and surveillance operations

• Plans to replace ageing fleets with 60 multirole transport aircraft for diverse operational terrain

• Additional investment in short-range air defence, including the Tunguska missile system

Experts note the growing role of drones and air power, influenced by recent conflicts. Despite diversifying suppliers, Russia remains a key defence partner due to cost and operational familiarity.
