Ukraine’s armed forces say they have regained territory along the eastern and southeastern frontline, as fighting intensifies across multiple regions.
Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine’s military, said Kyiv had retaken around 480 sq. km since late January 2026, including settlements in the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions.
Despite these gains, he warned that Russian forces are regrouping and continuing a spring offensive aimed at expanding territorial control and establishing a “buffer zone”.
“Russian troops are not abandoning their plans for further offensive operations and are regrouping their available forces and equipment,” Syrskyi said on the Telegram app late on Sunday (5 April).
“Despite significant losses in personnel and military equipment, the invaders aim to seize more Ukrainian territory and establish a ‘buffer zone’ in the Dnipropetrovsk region.”

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the frontline situation as the most stable since mid-2025, while analysts say Ukrainian counterattacks are disrupting Russian operations in key sectors.
