Somalia is preparing to launch its first offshore oil drilling campaign, marking a significant step in its entry into the global energy market.

A Turkish government-owned vessel is set to begin deepwater operations in the Arabian Sea, following seismic surveys that identified promising hydrocarbon reserves beneath offshore basins.

Petroleum Minister Dahir Shire described the development as a “historic milestone,” signalling Somalia’s transition from exploration to drilling. The project is led by the Turkish Petroleum Corporation, using its Çağrı Bey vessel on its first international mission.

The initiative reflects strengthening ties between Somalia and Türkiye under a 2024 production-sharing agreement, alongside broader economic and security cooperation.

• First-ever offshore drilling campaign launched by Somalia

• Seismic surveys indicate potential commercially viable reserves

• Türkiye expands energy role through Turkish Petroleum Corporation

• Officials highlight potential economic growth and regional energy positioning

Despite long-standing security challenges, officials say the project could support economic recovery if viable reserves are confirmed.
